Have you fallen off the health train? Going strong for a few weeks after the new year, trying to reach your resolutions, but then you fell off and haven't been able to get back on the health train? You are not alone... It's hard to get a schedule in place that you can comfortably continue throughout the year because it takes you out of your comfort zone. Once you experience this discomfort- we resist. It's human nature, but something you can conquer! If you have found yourself not going to the gym, exercising, eating healthy, or just making time for yourself- here are a few tips to help you: 1. Connect with why you want to reach the goals you set. Why do you want to reach this goal? Is it for you, your health, your spouse? If you can fully connect to why you want to reach this goal, then you are more likely to succeed. If you find yourself not reaching your goals, remind yourself why it's important to you and what it will bring to you. This can help reenergize your connection with the goal and get you back on track! 2. Don't let setbacks get you down. We all have those moments where we have halfway completed a goal, but we can't go any further. For example: our goal was to lose 20 pounds and we lost 10 and can't seem to lose the last 10 pounds. This in no way means that you are a failure or you didn't meet your goal- you did meet your goal of losing weight. Think of the positives that come from losing the 10 pounds: healthier, clothes fit better, you feel better, more energy, etc. From there you can... 3. Redefine your goals. You may have noticed that you set difficult goals to reach, so redefine them- there is no shame in that. If you lost 10 pounds and wanted to lose 20 pounds, maybe set the goal to lose another 10 or maybe to lose a certain amount of inches. We aren't all going to lose weight, but we may lose inches. You may also find that 10 was the perfect amount for you and you are happy with the way you feel and look! It's not always about the numbers- remember that! Life changes, things happen, reworking your goals to meet what you are currently facing is a great way to refresh yourself and start obtaining your goals again. 4. Reach out for help. Horizon Training Center is here to help you reach your goals! We offer TRX, Self Defense, Kickboxing, Jeet Kune Do, Personal Training, and Yoga & Meditation to take a fully balanced approach to helping everyone find the healthiest version of themselves! Let us know your goals and we can help design a plan of action to get your body in movement and your mind in motion! There are only a handful of people who have the ability to pull off the combination of good looks and deadly moves. James Bond, the cool intel agent in a tailored suit who can order a cocktail one minute and disarm an attacker the next. The assassin John Wick who was dragged back into the life, hellbent on delivering a fist-full of revenge. The ex-government operator Jason Bourne, fighting to reveal the truth he has forgotten. And let’s not forget Natasha Romanov, ex-Soviet assassin who can take out a room full of Generals in a slinky dress. These men and women know the value of a good suit to dazzle the eye and conceal deadly skill. Let’s not deny it, we’ve all watched these characters and wished we could be them. So join me at Horizon Training Center in your most dapper of outfits for a few hours of martial arts training fit for the big screen. We are going to go through a series of scenarios countering empty hand attacks; countering the jab, cross, and hook to return our own flurry of punishment. We’ll move on to cover a few empty hand vs blade counters; disarm and disable. You’ll have to stay sharp for these. At the end of the evening we’ll step into the danger zone by running a multiple opponent scenario. Dapper and non-Dapper are welcome but a dapper outfit will get you a discount for the workshop. Look good but I suggest wearing something that will let you move. You don’t have to do the full Bond tuxedo. Slacks and a button up will suffice. Egos are checked at the door. We are aiming to have a little fun and learn a few things. Cooperation, not competition tonight! We all want to look good so we’re going to help our partners look their best. Owning your own business can be a lot of work, but oh is it worth it! Every day we get to walk into a room filled with our passion, whether it be teaching yoga, TRX, or martial arts. We are living out our dreams!
For myself, Hannah, I know that every person that walks into my class, they are here for a reason. They are looking for health, balance, and healing! It makes my heart swell knowing that these amazing souls have entrusted me in this journey for them! We teach from the heart and that's one of the things I love so much about Horizon Training Center! Every instructor fully believes in the power of what we do! Another amazing perk of owning your own business, is being able to give back to the community! David and myself, donate our time and energy into as many great programs as we can. Ranging from Cherokee Family Violence Center, the Good Neighbor Homeless Shelter in Cartersville, and the Cherokee County Animal Shelter. From teaching self defense classes for a good cause, or yoga classes, we want to give back to the community of Cherokee County, and those surrounding. Stay tuned for more charity events that we host! Do you struggle with depression? Anxiety? Addiction? Constant negative thoughts? Did you ever think that practicing yoga or talking about things could help? Well it can!! Let Michele Stewart lead you through a very relaxing practice combined with an open and honest conversation about the things no one likes to discuss and see how it makes a difference. Michele is an amazingly open and honest yoga teacher, who touches every soul she meets! She creates a safe space with each class, opening herself up in hopes that others feel that they are not alone! Her rawness is what makes her so lovable! She allows everyone to work through their own issues, while holding space for each student. Michele has studied under Paul Grilley, a major proponent of Yin Yoga and anatomy. She brings this immense knowledge to each class! Throughout class, she will show you how talking about these things while snuggling into a yoga posture can bring calmness and stillness to your body and to your mind. We can guarantee relaxation, conversation, and hopefully a few laughs (guaranteed!) while talking about the tough things in life that helped her change, not only how she sees the world and herself, through the healing power of yoga! While relaxing into yin postures, we will converse about addiction, depression and anxiety, and how certain yoga postures can help you manage all of the above. Please be advised that this workshop is meant to be used in conjunction with a physician and/or counselor's care, not to replace professional care. I'm a cream puff. Nice people call me curvy, voluptuous. Mean people call me chubby. I've been looking for a workout that speaks to me for years. I've tried a LOT of different things, all of which had different effects on my body. I tried running. I saw incredibly fast results, but my shins were always sore and I just hated every step. I tried dance and I loved it more than anything, but it's hard to find dance programs for adults. Zumba was fun, but I didn't feel like it worked my whole body. I tried weight lifting but it was so boring. I looked into Crossfit, but I saw so many people injured and sort of weirdly celebrating that injury - I have no time for a workout that acts as self-punishment instead of self-care. My yoga teacher steered me toward TRX and after months of being too nervous to start, I finally gave it a try. WHOA. I pushed myself too far the first TRX class. I almost couldn't stand up afterwards! I learned my limits fast and as I kept attending classes, I learned how to push them safely. I saw very rapid changes in my body and my energy level. I started losing inches and stopped huffing and puffing up the stairs. I started noticing how much better I felt in class when I had eaten good food during the day leading up to it, and started avoiding junk food. I'm never bored in TRX because the workouts are always different and changing, and I'm always able to do more than I could in the previous class. It's exciting, it's fast, it's whole-body, and it's fun! ~Hannah Mitchell"Why I TRX!" Partner yoga is an amazing way to build better communication with others (and not just a significant other), as it teaches us how to attune to others’ energy through non-verbal communication. We live in a society where we are often taught to be an individual and an individual only, making it difficult for us to connect with others. But “yoga” means “to unite” and connect, not only our own mind, body and spirit, but also with others. Through partner yoga, we can learn the tools to connect with people close to us. Here are some other amazing benefits of partner yoga: 1) Creates Emotional & Physical Support. We learn to rely on our partner for creating poses as well as maintaining balance to support each other. We also learn to focus together on the end goal: the pose. We have to learn how to enhance our communication, because we will need support from the other person—emotionally and physically. In doing so, we help each other get deeper into our poses than we would without a partner. 2) Being in the Present. Creating these poses with our partner, we are learning to be in the present moment, which is what ultimately matters the most. The Here. The Now. Yoga is all about mindfulness and cultivating present moment awareness. By bringing focus and control to our breath, we cultivate this present moment awareness. In partner yoga, the cultivation of presence through breath is even more tangible, as we match inhales and exhales, holding space for each other and in turn building off of each other’s mindfulness and stillness. 3) Fun. We get to be kids again. Playing airplane, balancing on one foot—when was the last time you just played like a kid, letting go of adult life? It can bring a new spice to our relationships. It’s an activity that involves us and our significant other with no other worries in the world—other than not dropping the other, maybe. 4) Letting Go. We learn to let go in the midst of the fun and the moment. We let go of what needs to be done the next day, the next week. We are having too much fun learning about ourselves and our partners that we don’t have time to think about anything else. By allowing ourselves to let go, we are able to tap into the truth of who we are, who our partner is, and why we are together. 5) Building More Self-Awareness & Trust. This arises from the powerful connection of oneness. When we become more trusting of our partner, we have created a safe place to deepen our own self-trust. We are then able to be more self-aware of our needs. Listening to our breath, we match the breath of our partner, and we connect. We unite. We yoke. We yoga. 6) The Power Of Loving Touch. “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around…” ~ Leo Buscaglia. The power of a loving touch is undeniable. It brings us peace, nurturing, connection and love. We learn how to create trust with our partner that will help facilitate our receptiveness to the power of loving touch. I highly suggest a partner yoga class this love season for you and your significant other—or a friend! Create a connection. Share your love. The world needs more peace and love, and it starts with you! To sign up for our class February 10th at 7-8:30pm, Click here: https://trial-cb53613a.sites.z... And you don't have to be a yogi! Just come in and have fun with your partner! Kids Yoga is a wonderful way to get your kids moving, using their imagination, and give them the tools to becoming aware. A lot of schools are understanding the importance of yoga and the increased concentration amongst their students. Therefore, performing better on tests, etc. In our kids classes, we start with an introduction to get the kids comfortable with the group and their teacher. We then work on breathing exercises to calm the kids. From there we begin the asana, poses, where they can use their imagination and create poses as well. We read a story and discuss things we should do and not do (Niyamas and Yamas from the 8 Limbs of Yoga). And then we use our imagination to go to a happy place where we can relax and be free! But there are SO many more benefits than just concentration.
I know it’s not often you run into a guy who isn’t squeamish about buying a box of pads or tampons on an emergency run, much less a guy who puts his picture on an event saying “bring me tampons.” Growing up with two older sisters...it just doesn’t bother me. Nor should it really, it’s just a function of the body. Sorry guys, but get over it. What did bother me, however, was a video I watched that popped up on my Facebook feed one day. It was a short documentary about the needs of homeless women. In particular, it focused on the needs of women that weren’t being met in shelters or donation facilities. The number one request that was not being met was hygiene products. Women are not receiving the help they need and if they can’t find a way to make do, they have to suffer through their menstrual cycle without any personal hygiene products. This Horizon event was put together with the intention of helping fill that need. Friday night we will focus specifically on joint locking techniques and chokes. Joint locking is the method of controlling the body by rotating and aligning bones in the body in such a way that it limits motion or “locks” the body or joint. Typically you can expect to see these techniques done on the wrist, elbow, and shoulder. They can also be applied to the ankles, knees, and hips. These techniques can be used as way to immobilize someone or to move them to a place you want them to be. Chokes are little bit different. Simply by their nature they are an elevated threat response. You don’t choke someone unconscious just because they annoy you...no matter how much you may want to! Chokes can be classified into two categories: airway restriction and blood flow restriction. Either can take only seconds to render a person unconscious. If held too long even death can occur. So on Friday night we’ll be training some of the major joint locks and chokes found in the martial arts and their self defense applications. There are a lot of details involved to make these work effectively and even more to train them safely. Be ready to come make new friends….and then choke them! Train Hard! -Sifu David Mitchell HERizon Red Tent Temple is a place for women to come together and empower one another! Rising together to claim our own power! 2 years ago in March I was approaching my graduation from Yoga Teacher Training at Be Yoga in Downtown Marietta and I remember sitting down to reflect on how far I had come, as well as other dreams I wanted to manifest. A Red Tent was on this short list. I always knew that I wanted to be a part of something that would help women find empowerment. Where women could come together and raise one another up, as well as learn new things from the other women in their community! On my honeymoon back in May, I was sitting on the beach with my husband reading Women Who Run with The Wolves. It truly spoke to me and woke up something inside of me... "Healthy wolves & healthy women share certain psychic characteristics. Keen sensing, playful spirit, and a heightened capacity for devotion. Wolves & women are relational by nature inquiring, possessed of great endurance & strength. They are deeply intuitive, intensely concerned with their young, their mates, and their pack. They are experienced in adapting to constantly changing circumstances; they are fiercely stalwart and very brave" Women Who Run With the Wolves - Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés. I realized that there are other wolves, women, out there who are looking for their pack. I looked at my husband and told him I wanted to start a Red Tent. And so here we are! When Horizon Training Center came into my life, my business partners wife- and my dear friend, Hannah Mitchell, and I began the brainstorming for a Red Tent- HERizon! We knew we had the space, and the intention, that it would come to fruition! What is our intention? Hannah Squared (Hannah Hutcheson and Hannah Mitchell) hope to empower other women, bring women together and stop the divide of judgement/insecurities/etc, educate women on the power that we harness, educate one another on topics ranging from networking to crocheting, sharing a sacred space with beautiful souls, and eventually providing a space where we can bring in the next generation of women and teach them how to embrace their bodies, their menstrual cycles, and know that they will always have a pack of wolves right beside them! What is a Red Tent? A Red Tent is where women gather in a circle, from all different walks of life, and share with their hearts open and leaving any preconceived notions and judgement outside of the tent. This is a place where we care for one another and nurture ourselves with healing, song, meditation, story telling, council, music, and sharing. We learn about our bodies and their cycles, the lunar cycles, reconnecting to Earth, rewilding ourselves to our natural self, and develop and nurture ways to cope. We are nurturing a sacred Sisterhood that so many of us have lost in today's competitive society. Join us, Friday, January 27th, at the HERizon Red Tent Temple Hosted by Horizon Training Center as we empower our fellow sisters, learn from one another, network amongst a group of like minded sisters, and learn more about ourselves, our world, and claim our power in this world! 6:30-7 is for everyone to get comfortable and we will not start our sharing circle until 7:30. So please, do not feel the need to rush! We will be here for you! We will be providing a vegetarian chili for our first HERizon Red Tent Temple, so please RSVP so we know how much to provide. Feel free to bring a small snack, dish, or drink to share with one another. However, we do ask that there is no alcohol respecting any sisters that may be in recovery as well as honoring the sacred space that we are making together. Also, please feel free to bring your musical instruments, cards, healing hands, etc to share with your sisters. This is a place of unconditional love and giving! Also, if you would like, wear red! A Love Donation is asked of $10 to enter the tent. |
