Many many moons ago, I was diagnosed with Vasovagal Syncope. What is this you ask? Vasovagal syncope (vay-zoh-VAY-gul SING-kuh-pee) occurs when you faint because your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress. It may also be called neurocardiogenic syncope. The vasovagal syncope trigger causes your heart rate and blood pressure to drop suddenly. That leads to reduced blood flow to your brain, causing you to briefly lose consciousness. Vasovagal syncope is usually harmless and requires no treatment. But it's possible you may injure yourself during a vasovagal syncope episode. Your doctor may recommend tests to rule out more serious causes of fainting, such as heart disorders. At 22 I was sitting in a cardiologists office trying to rule out a heart disorder. I had MANY episodes of me fainting. From band concerts, sitting at the beach and getting up too fast, the passing of my dear cousin had me emotionally on edge leading me to faint, cutting onions at work and instead of cutting the onion- getting my finger, etc. They had no idea what was wrong with me and sent me to Emory to see an Electrocardiologist. He diagnosed me with Vasovagal Syncope and asked me to never give blood, to avoid blood, and to take my time getting up (I have low blood pressure too). I spent a few months being very careful and having fewer episodes. Then ----- I found yoga helped! I have maybe had 3 episodes in the last 9 years and I owe that to yoga! Yoga has been shown in long-term yoga practitioners to improve autonomic variability and the stability of the autonomic nervous system response to stress. The practice of yoga not only stabilized my response to stress, decreased my stress, showed me the stressors in my life that were not serving me that I could "cut out" of my life. It also taught me to breathe through situations where I would normally pass out. Yoga has also conditioned my body making me healthier and more intune with what is actually going on. The last episode I had, I was aware it was coming and was able to stop it mid falling by simply breathing! I'm no Doctor- but I can tell you that yoga can help fine tune your body and mind, no matter what you are suffering from, it will find a way to heal you!

Click the button below to read it! I have been asked before where I find the motivation to get up and do what I do. If you don't know let me take you through an average day. I get up at 5:45am every morning so I can shower and help get my 3 year old daughter ready for her day. I work a regular a day job in technology support from 7:30am to 4:00pm. After that I go instruct classes and do the everyday battle that is owning a business. I find some time to play with the toddler and talk with my wife. I'm studying for a personal trainer certification. Some nights I don't see home till around 10:30 in the evening. Somewhere in there I find time to continue my own martial arts training and I go train different systems throughout the week. If there is anytime left before midnight I do dishes, laundry, and pickup the mayhem my daughter may have left. She gets most of it but there's always a few extra things to tidy. My head doesn't usually hit the pillow until midnight or so. Then it starts all over again in a brief 5 hours and 45 minutes. It's not that wild every day but it can be. And to tell you the truth motivation doesn't get me through it. Motivation to me is a response to an emotional stimuli. I am motivated to do something because I feel inspired. I am inspired by a beautiful picture, music or more often than not seeing the hard work of some else. I am motivated to take action. Motivation is therefore emotional component of inspiration. And as we all know emotions can be fickle and unreliable. If there is nothing sparking that inspiration there is no motivation. It is an emotional high, and you end up chasing that more than you do actually getting something done. You want that chemical concoction of feeling inspired and motivated. And what needs to be done often falls to the wayside. Instead, what I focus on developing in between bouts of sudden motivation is discipline. Discipline is there no matter how you are feeling. You do something because you tell yourself to do it. You don't have to wait for the feeling to catch you. For example this blog post. Writing is not my strong suit (as the grammatical errors will show) and I put it off as much as possible. But today is the day I have set aside to write for my business. And here I am. Writing though I don't much feel like doing it. It is one of many things I'll do today for my business and family. There will always be things you don't feel like doing, but that have to get done none-the-less. Discipline develops the same as any other skill, with practice. Start on the small scale. Rinsing dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. Finding 10 minutes to practice your art. Finding 5 minutes to simply sit and focus your mind for the day. And the key is to do it again and again. And it will force you to prioritize your time and give weight to the things you spend that time on. Probably the most difficult part is determining what really matters to you and shedding all the other things that aren't. One of the simplest methods to help develop your discipline is by creating a Streak List. No, not a list of places you want to grace with a full Monty view. It is a list of something you need to do either daily or weekly and every day you do it you mark it off with a red X. The idea is to mark a red X on every day. Don't break the streak. There are several apps that keep track of it for you. I use one called Productive. The longer you keep the streak going the less likely you are to break it. You count 115 days of accomplishments and you really don't want to stop. Establish your routine. Start your week with a list of what needs to be done. It may be a repeat of last week and that's okay. Having them there will help you manage your time and let you tackle new obstacles. Humans are visual creatures and seeing what needs to happen and marking them off is extremely satisfying. And it will help you gain control over what may seem like an overwhelming chaos of tasks. It may even help you find time to focus on something you really want to do for yourself but never felt you had the time to. -Sifu David Horizon Martial Arts Horizon Training Center Join us for Natural Hot Yoga! Hannah is frugal (just kidding- kind of) and the Summer Heat is upon us! ;) Our studio isn't designed with the high tech heaters to make it a "true" hot yoga class, however, we are embracing Mother Nature and her hot days in the South! Saving the planet with each drop of sweat! Why don't we offer Hot Yoga? As we mentioned- our building is not designed for hot yoga! Our building was built in 1910! We have little insulation in our building and our exterior walls are a thick block! We could place heaters in our building, but then we would be losing lots of heat. When we you lose heat (or air conditioning) you are using more resources. This means you are using more power, more fuel, etc. So we are saving Mother Earth with using as little energy as we have to! Over the Summer months, we will embrace that sweet Southern heat and save the planet with each drop of sweat! Why is Hot Yoga so popular? Well there are lot's of reasons that people love it! One common misconception is that you are getting more of a workout in a hot class compared to a non-hot class. This is not necessarily true. Yes you may be sweating a lot more- but this is because you are detoxifying from the heat and possibly sweating out the water (stay hydrated!). A lot of hot yoga classes are sequenced for a more power class so you can get that cardiovascular workout you are looking for, but heat does not equate more of a workout! And you can make heat within your body with your breath! (Which you can learn about if you come to a class!) The benefits I truly enjoy in a hot class is the openness of the muscles! This can be a good thing and a bad thing! If you are careful and listen to your body- you can go deeper into the poses because the heat has helped the body to relax, improving your breath and focusing your mind. However, some people may get a little too excited that they can go deeper and let the ego take over- this is where injuries can happen. Like always in a yoga class, be slow and listen to your body- that is what you are here for in a yoga class. Yoga means to yoke- the union- the union of the mind and body through the power of the breath! So come check us out! The temperature will range from 80-85ish (the highest we will let it go is 90). Natural Hot Yoga will take place on Wednesday's 6-7pm starting June 6th until August 30th. This will be a Flow Yoga class filled with strength, balance, and deep stretching. Available for all levels! My space is small. I get it. 660 odd square feet isn't much of a training area. In that area there are 6 wooden columns holding up the handmade wooden ceiling beams from 1910. So less than 660 square feet, really. Oh, and no mats on the floor. Just badly-painted hardwood. Is that a complaint? Not really. I started training in a space just about the same size, only with a concrete floor. Hard and cold. I trained Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Kali, and Muay Thai in that room. We were even barefoot most of the time. Oh and let's not forget KFM, Keysi Fighting Method, which was outside on the pavement. Better bring your knee pads. Training done intelligently will still let you move with intensity but also take care of yourself and your partner. Like pads in football, it didn't make the game safer...it only let the player rely on pads for their safety and throw caution to the wind. They still get hurt and they still retire young. So what do I like about our small space? Well, it keeps class size small. I know, probably not the most business-savvy statement. I should want packed out classes, but I don't. The smaller class allows me to instruct much closer, focusing on my students' particular hurdles, needs, and questions. If I have a large class and one student is struggling, should I hold a class of 30 back while we wait on him or her to get it? Should I leave the one student behind because everyone else gets it? The answer to both is no. Not in a classroom setting. Everyone is there to learn. Everyone is paying to be there. So what do you do then? For me the answer is smaller class sizes. In a room of ten or less, now we can have a meaningful discussion. Every class is like a mini private group lesson. What about the columns? Do they interfere? Not in the least. Look at FMA instructors in the Philippines. They train in shorts and flip flops in the street or in the backyard. KFM trains in elevators and boardrooms and cars. Fights take place in the real world, and the real world is full of stuff. A fully stocked school is a luxury, but not a necessity. You train with what you have. The only thing that all the trimmings offer is that people are more inclined to think a person is competent. But we all know that that's not always the case. Why train small? It's the attention to detail. Martial Arts is a study of inches. When you're up close and personal you have to be spot on. When you're surrounded by columns you have to be aware of your movements. When the floor is hard you have to engage the ground with intelligence. Training in my small space makes me a better martial artist. Birthday Cake Emily has created such a healing business, Energy Insights, and I (Hannah H.) am so lucky to have crossed paths with her! She is always bringing the light to everything she does and we cannot wait for everyone to meet her! Come meet Emily & Energy Insights at the Spring Social & Shop!
1. What is your business? Energy Insights is my dream business. It is working with the energy body in subtle yet powerful ways. Our bodies are made of energy currents and some of that energy can get stuck when we don't process emotions. And, I LOVE processing emotions. It is my ability to tap into emotions without fear that equips me to do this work. Emotion is what makes us divinely human. There is no need to fear emotions. When you embrace how you feel without judgement you are able to heal. And then you transcend that state to reach a higher state. FEEL. HEAL. TRANSCEND. 2. Why do you do what you do? I do this work because it is a calling. I didn't ask to do this. I was lead to it through synchronicities. When I am ready to learn someone is there to teach me. It is an honor to be in the position of both teacher and student. I love sharing what I have learned with others. If I can ignite the healing abilities in someone else I am living my purpose and paying it forward. I do this because I believe we are ready to raise our consciousness to new heights and in doing so we bring more love, compassion and kindness to this planet. It is my privilege to do my part. 3. How did you get your idea or concept for the business? Energy Insights came to me. As did my motto FEEL. HEAL. TRANSCEND. The body is always communicating with us. These are energetic insights, messages from our body to our Soul or vice versa. If your heart is aching (grief), your stomach is in knots (fear), or your mind is racing (anxiety) you are getting energetic messages from your body that something is not congruent in your life. Pay attention. Feel what you are trying to avoid. Let yourself go there. I promise it is buried treasure, an insight there for your growth. If you ignore these messages they will get louder and more painful. 4. What is your mission with your business? My mission is to bring more light to this planet by connecting people to their own Divinity. I do believe with all my heart that the Kingdom of God is within you (and me). 5. What inspires you? Nature inspires me. It is a clear message from God that we are loved! 6. Do you support local? Is it important to you now that you are a local business owner? I love buying direct from artisans. I know they put their heart and soul into their goods. 7. What makes your business unique? Oh there are lots of people doing what I do. It is my individual energy that resonates with some people more than others. Those are the people I want to attract. I like to have fun while doing some really deep stuff. I drop f-bombs. I don't take myself too serious even though I take what I do seriously. It is a delicate balance. I am not looking to reach everyone but the ones that I reach know it and we have a blast! 8. Where can people find you? I am revamping my website so you can reach me for now at www.facebook.com/EnergyInsights 9. If your business were a cupcake- what flavor would you be? It would be a devils food cake with a yummy fluffy white filling! We go through the rich darkness to get to the light delicious center! We are both light and dark and both are perfect. You cannot pour from an empty cup... But so much of us do... It doesn't have to be just women giving the energy that they don't have for themselves, but we tend to do it more often than not. Living in the mentality that you cannot say "no" and that you don't want anyone to suffer, you will go above and beyond to make sure that they are taken care of, while you yourself are on your last leg and crying when alone because you are so tired. This happens every day. It happens with me often. That final straw that just broke my back... Where I throw in the towel and take a "Me Day"... But that's not healthy... We need to maintain an active self-care routine to prevent this burnout. Self-care is taking the time out of your busy day, or busy week, and doing whatever makes your soul sing. It could be reading, watching the stars, taking a bath, getting a massage, yoga class, communion with sisters, cooking yourself a nice meal... Whatever makes you sit back and say "ahh that's exactly what I needed to let go". It is encouraged to fill your cup at least once a week. Some carve out time to do it every day and kudos for that! In our HERizon Red Tent Temple this Friday, March 31st (630-9pm) we will discuss why it's important to take care of ourselves, as we fill our "cups" in the tent! Join us as we fill ourselves us so we can go back out into the world healing, loving, and taking care of those around us! 218 Jewelry makes one of a kind pieces! All handcrafted from the one of a kind soul Lori! She takes copper crafts to a whole new level, infusing love, scripture, and the perfect amount of femininity to each piece! Come check out all the amazing goodies 218 Jewelry has at the Spring Social & Shop!
1. What is your business? My business is 218 Jewelry. I like to create inspirational and faith based jewelry. Two examples are simple mustard seed necklaces and my molten solder on copper line which includes pendant necklaces, cuffs and earrings. 2. Why do you do what you do? I am an interior designer by trade but am not able to do that full time due to health reasons. Knowing that I had a purpose, I turned my jewelry making hobby into a full time business. I knew I needed to be designing something pretty! 3. How did you get your idea or concept for the business? Ever wake up just to look at the clock? Well I did this several nights, and the clock always said 2:18, then the number showed up on street signs, car tags, etc. It is also my birthday. I was beginning to think I was crazy! Lol I thought, "I'm gonna die on my bithday!!!" A few years had past, and I was still here. One morning I woke up and turned on the tv. One of those church shows was on and James 2:18 was written across the bottom of the screen. "But someone will say, 'you have faith; I have deeds.' Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds." I knew then, that I had a purpose. Everyone has God given talents and we are supposed to use them for His good. What are your talents? 4. What is your mission with your business? I love to inspire and uplift people! If I can do that through jewelry as a constant reminder that we are all loved, that makes me happy. 5. What inspires you? Meeting new people and making pretty things that I know are going to be special to my customers, friends and family. 6. Do you support local? Is it important to you now that you are a local business owner? Yes, I believe we can all help each other. I am happy to be a part of The Horizon Center's Spring Social and Shop. 7. What makes your business unique? I make jewelry out of hand cut copper sheets and solder that is heated then stamped with intricate stamps. No two are alike. 8. Where can people find you? I am part of a very bunch of talented artists at Twist Fine Consignments and gifts in Marble Hill (near IGA.) I am also on Facebook and Etsy. 9. Tell us anything we missed! My family is more important to me than anything. I have been married for almost thirty years to a very talented welder and knife maker who also enjoys playing the guitar and singing with me. And we have two very smart, independent, beautiful daughters. 10. If your business were a cupcake- what flavor would you be? Caramel with unrefined sugar sprinkles. Because it is copper in color, yummy, and shiny on top. |
